Bow Adventures™
Contributors’
Guidelines
Bow Adventures is an
online magazine featuring bowhunting, competitive archery, bowfishing and
general enjoyment of the outdoors. Bow
Adventures only covers activities involving the bow. No rifle, shotgun, or crossbow hunting or
shooting is covered.
The
e-Magazine
Bow Adventures is
published quarterly. Issues run in
January, April, July and October.
January features small game hunting and gear reviews and previews. April targets turkey hunting and field/habitat
development. July features bowfishing,
target/3d competition, and hog/coyote hunting.
October will run features on whitetail deer, elk, and mule deer. Though the issues will be geared toward the
mentioned target stories, other features may run as well. For instance, stories on African game would
likely run during the July issue for hunting recaps or April for preparation
articles on African trips. When
contributing, these should be kept in mind.
Typical articles should
run between 1000 and 2500 words. Some
features may run in two parts if more words are needed. Photos should accompany submissions when
possible. Photo guidelines are listed
later.
Queries should be
emailed to BowAdventures@gmail.com
. Complete manuscripts may also be sent
as long as they fit the text guidelines below.
The
Text
All submissions should
be submitted in either Microsoft Word or as text in an email. Paragraphs should be indented at the
beginning of the paragraph. There should
be no extra line separation in the paragraphs. Check your word paragraph
settings under Page Layout. Spacing
should be set at 0 for before and after and line spacing should be set at
‘multiple’ at 1.15. Sentences should
have two spaces after a period. The text
will run in the magazine as Times New Roman size 14 left justified if you wish
to set those parameters as well. This
will give you an idea of how many pages your story will run.
Photos should be sent
as separate attachments. DO NOT paste them
in the text of your submission. If a
photo needs to be placed in a particular location with your text, do the
following:
[pic1] caption
Label the photos as
pic1, pic2, pic3, etc.
Stories should be in
first person when possible. Include
information on gear used (bow, arrow, broadhead, backpack, etc).
Gear reviews need to
include links to the website and msrp.
If an item is reviewed negatively, contact the company prior to
submission. Allow the company to read
the review and comment and include in the review. We do not want reviews negative in nature and
find out later the item was used incorrectly.
Include company information such as history with the item being
reviewed. Offer to submit quotes from
the company on why they designed the product, the target market, etc.
The
Photos
All photos should be
taken with a minimum of 5 megapixels. Do
not crop or alter photos prior to submission.
We will crop it to fit allowable space when needed. If the photograph submitted with a story is
by someone other than you, include the contributing photographer’s name, email,
and phone number. If the photo has an
identifiable person, the subject’s name, email, and phone number will also need
to be submitted.
Cover photos should
take into account the masthead. For this
reason, if you have a potential cover photo, allow 25% at the top of the photo
to be free of subject so the masthead can be used.
Table of Contents
photos will always be a double page spread and converted to sepia tone. Potential photos for the ToC will have clear
areas either to the left or right or both so the text of the ToC can be read
cleanly.
Photos used for the
article can take different shapes and space.
Depending on the quality of the photo, the photo may be a two page
spread for the article title. Take into
account the need for the article title and byline.
